The English History through the Eyes of the French Erudites in the Early Modern Epoch

The Early Modern French intellectual circles demonstrated a vivid interest not only in vernacular problems and history but in the foreign affairs and history of other European countries as well. The interweaving of the French and the English history was obvious to the 16th and 17th-century scholars, so a considerable amount of publications consecrated to the problems of English past and present appeared in France of the epoch. Both original French works and translations of English authors into French of the kind provide a specific material, which permits to make certain conclusions on the image of England in the Early Modern French literature. The rise of interest to the problems and history of neighbouring countries was quiet natural in the epoch of the birth of European vernacular historical writing. Constructing vernacular histories was deeply connected with the understanding of the present and required appeals to the past and the present of other European countries.
