Abstract

The article is an attempt to analyse the nature of a medieval urban association through the comparison of two urban unions — the Cinque Ports of England and the German Hanse. Several issued are taken under consideration: the composition of an association, membership, the aim, organisational structure, the relationship between members of the association, the relations with the authorities, and the successfulness of an association. A special emphasis is made on the character of these associations. Despite different aims, circumstances, and many other distinctions, there are several similar features, including the logic of their development. Flexibility and free association were characteristic features of both organisations at the early stage of their existence, which seems to have been the key to their success. With time, under the pressure of specific historical circumstances and the logic of an association’s existence and development, both the Cinque Ports and the Hanse got a more structured form and were gradually becoming more regulated. This process coincided with the highest point of their development and powerfulness and was becoming more pronounced with their decline.
