Abstract

Since the end of the 12th century the number of Parisian parishes grew rapidly, as it was in many cities of the French kingdom. This process went hand in hand with the city's territorial and demographic growth. During the next century, parish communities became an important factor of urban life. At the time, due to the University, there was a large number of priests and monks of various orders in Paris. Most of them were well educated and fluent in eloquence. Under the circumstances, preaching became an important instrument in the struggle for the flock. According to different sources, there was an incredible upsurge in preaching in the 13th century. The homilies reflect the aspiration of parish priests to create a local urban community, to unite Parisians around a particular parish and to form a special parish identity. This problem is studied on the basis of the sermons of Ranulphe de la Houblonnière (c. 1225—1288), a master of theology, canon, then bishop of Paris and, without doubt, one of the most significant preachers of the last third of 13th century.
