Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of French imperial discourse in the last third of the 19th — early 20th centuries. We are interested in the colonial discourse associated with the actualization of the memory of the Napoleonic era. This article attempts to explain the transformation of the historical memory of the Napoleonic past by French colonial ideologues. An analysis was made of the texts of P. Leroy-Beaulieu, L Deshamps, A. Giraud, J. Armand. Having studied the narratives of these authors, it was revealed that the aversion and critics of Napoleon’s colonial policy and direct accusations against him were replaced by a more balanced interpretation of the events of colonial history. The article concludes that this transformation directly depended on the success of French colonial policy.
