To the Methodology of Paleographic Research of the Greek Majuscule of the 8th — 9th Centuries: Diacritics of the Byzantine Manuscripts

The invention of the Byzantine minuscule in the third quarter of the 8th century and the appeared with this innovation difficulties of reading and copying texts immediately brought to life the reconstruction of the ancient system of diacritics, ascended to the epoch of the Alexandrian school, which made it possible to confidently distinguish the beginning and end of a word in a line, and, as a result, to read the text accurately. This system, created for the minuscule, was immediately borrowed for the continuing majuscule. The study of diacritics in the first one hundred and fifty years of its use in Byzantine manuscripts now makes it possible to date and examine Greek bookish and documentary writing from the middle of the 8th until the end of the 9th century more confidently than has been done before.
