Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the role of legal officials in the formation of the public-legal nature of the Royal power in France of the Late Middle Ages. This subject is of particular importance in the context of current trends in historiography to expose the “magic of the state” and radical doubts about its value as a form of organization of power. Judicial officials-lawyers, being an advanced part of the emerging social group of bureaucracy, played a leading role in transforming the nature of the supreme secular power and in its legitimization. Their ideas and practices allow us to understand how the process of the society's adoption of the apparatus of Royal power takes place. The article investigates the rhetoric of the parliamentarians in favor of the public status of the Supreme Court as an equal, just and merciful refuge of justice on the records of the Parliament of Paris. It is shown how these ideas were put into practice on the basis of several cases. As a result, conclusions are drawn about the special position of officials as intermediaries between the government and the society.
