Abstract

The article presents Russia's mediation activities in the process of peaceful resolution of the conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh in 1993—1994. It is emphasized that the normal negotiation process was hampered by the rivalry of the mediators arising from geopolitical interests. The article comprehensively shows the role of the Russian Federation in the process of peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, which contributed to the ceasefire agreement signed in May 1994 between the conflicting parties. Russia, that had played a leading role in the region for centuries, became the only mediator who managed to achieve a ceasefire, which could not be achieved in terms of the new balance of power in 2016—2023.
