Abstract

The article discusses the formation and activities of universal human rights treaty bodies, their relationship and correlation with the UN; it appraises the weight and value of their decisions. It cites critical opinions of states regarding general observations and opinions on individual applications, adopted by treaty bodies, and responses to them by state authorities, first and foremost the judiciary. It is suggested to accept the views of treaty bodies as ponderable recommendations, rather than attributing to them extrinsic legal weight and binding force
