Lexical Reconstruction for the Reconstruction of Prehistory: Proto-Afrasian Terms Related to Weaponry, Warfare and Other Armed Conflicts [Leksicheskaia rekonstruktsiia dlia rekonstruktsii predystorii: praafraziiskie terminy dlia oruzhiia, voiny i drugikh vooruzhennykh konfliktov]

Abstract

The article aims at reconstructing Proto-Afrasian terms related to weaponry and armed conflicts, including highlighting the problem of war in prehistory from the linguistic angle usually ignored by archaeologists and prehistorians in the hot discussions of this problem. The proto-languages of early Afrasians and their descendants, northern Afrasians, speakers of proto-Semitic-Egyptian-Berber-Chadic, both hypothetically identified by the author of the article as the creators of the Natufian and Post-Natufian archaeological cultures of the Levant, split, according to his glottochronological calculations (based on Swadesh’s method radically improved by S.A. Starostin) in the 11th–10th mill. BCE. Adduced are detailed etymologies of 12 reconstructed terms for weapons (from mace to shield) and 13 for various kinds of armed conflicts; a few of them point to the meaning “war” either already taken shape or close to forming in the Proto-Afrasian lexicon and, hence, its speakers’ perception.

1 Прорыв последних десятилетий в популяционной и археологической генетике, спутниковой археологии, методах датирования, прогресс в социокультурной антропологии, кросс-культурных исследованиях, сравнительной мифологии и фольклористике значительно продвинули нас на пути реконструкции предыстории человечества (ср.: Korotayev et al. 2019). Другой быстро прогрессирующей, хотя и наиболее недооцененной областью исследования является сравнительно-историческая лингвистика, особенно в области сравнения дальнеродственных языков и реконструкции праязыков все более хронологических глубокого уровня, применение которой может осветить аспекты доисторической жизни, менее доступные или даже недоступные другим областям и методам и наиболее адекватно описываемые при координации лингвистических данных с экстралингвистическими. Такие новаторские междисциплинарные работы 1980-х годов, как “Ранние семиты в Азии: земледелие и скотоводство по лингвистическим данным (VIII–IV тыс. до н.э.)” И.М. Дьяконова (Diakonoff 1981) и “Индоевропейский язык и индоевропейцы” Т.В. Гамкрелидзе и Вяч.Вс. Иванова (Гамкрелидзе, Иванов 1984), стимулировали подобные исследования в различных языковых семьях Старого Света. В изучении ранней этноязыковой истории носителей языков афразийской (афроазиатской, семитохамитской) макросемьи это в основном работы чешского лингвиста В. Блажека (напр.: Blažek 1994, 2013) и мои (напр.: Militarev 1990, 2000, 2002; Милитарев 2019); о текущем состоянии, значимости и дальнейших перспективах этой линии исследований в евразийских и африканских штудиях смотри в статье, опубликованной в 2019 г. в журнале Social Evolution and History (Korotayev et al. 2019).
2 У настоящей статьи двойная цель: 1) представить набор реконструированных праафразийских терминов определенного семантического поля, что само по себе может быть интересно историкам первобытности, археологам, этнографам, и 2) продемонстрировать возможности классического сравнительно-исторического метода, обогащенного более поздними дополнительными методами, такими как глоттохронология, разработанная М. Свадешем (Swadesh 1955) и существенно улучшенная С.А. Старостиным (напр.: Starostin 2000), на примере одной из спорных проблем древней истории – доисторической войны.
3 В научной печати, особенно в работах последних двух десятилетий, живо обсуждаются причины древних войн и мотивации воюющих сторон (Ferguson 2000), ранние свидетельства существования войн (Otterbein 2004; Kennedy 2016) и другие связанные с доисторическими войнами вопросы. Проблематике войн и – шире – доисторических конфликтов была посвящена международная конференция 2018 г. (Hansen, Krause 2019). Сама война рядом исследователей “правильно определяется, как одна из причин социальной эволюции” (Carneiro 1970b; цит. по: Джонсон, Эрл 2017: 34). Однако сама правомерность вопроса о причинах войн подвергается сомнениям: “…несмотря на значение такого процесса, как война, поиск причины войн в действительности отвлекает и затемняет их природу и место в эволюции человеческих обществ” (Там же).
