Abstract

Drawn on the written sources of the mid-16th – early 17th centuries, the article reconstructs the system of personal names among the Aztecs (Nahuas) – founders of the largest indigenous civilization in Mesoamerica. It examines the principles of name giving among the Aztecs before their first contact with Spanish conquerors in 1519 It also analyzes relations between naming patterns and Nahua notions concerning human nature and place of the human being in the world and society. The main argument of the article is the key role of the name in construction of one’s social identity in the Aztec society.
