Abstract

Using histo-physiological and morpho-geometric methods, the structure of the papillomatous junction of the epidermal stratum and dermal papillae ("papillomatous netting" – PN) in the skin of cetaceans (beluga, bowhead and gray whales) and sirens (American manatee, dugong) in comparative aspect has been studied. It is shown that the relative degree of development of the PN is quite similar in the representatives of both groups, but there are significant differences in the configuration of the PN, the volume of its "free area of a grille", the degree of compression of the skin in the vertical direction and the density of the skin that affects its flotage. The differences obtained are discussed from the point of view of the biology of species.
