Glaciological Studies at the Tian Shan Physico-Geographical Station and R. D. Zabirov’s Contribution to Their Development

This paper reviews the history of long-time complex stationary geographical research at the Tian Shan High-Altitude Physico-Geographical Station of the USSR and Kirghiz SSR Academies of Sciences (presently, the Tian Shan High-Altitude Research Center), founded in 1948 by a glaciologist G. A. Avsyuk, the head of the North-Kirghiz Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Geography. The Station served as a base for the scientists and students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) from across the USSR. Its personnel and members of the expeditions made significant contributions to the studies of mountain glaciers, rivers, climate, littoral processes, paleogeography, pedogeography, biogeography, and conservation. It is shown that the most fruitful period in the Station’s work was the time when it was headed by R. D. Zabirov (from 1954 to 1976). The paper analyzes his scientific biography as well as the Station staff’s accomplishments under his leadership.
