Abstract

The theoretical construct of “maternal fetal attachment”, also referred to in the literature as antenatal, perinatal or prenatal attachment that describes the emotional bond between a pregnant woman and her baby in the womb is discussed in this information and analytics review. In contrast to the traditional meaning of attachment which describes children's behavioural patterns towards significant adults, antenatal attachment focuses on parents’ feelings towards the child. In its formation, images of parenthood, infancy and pregnancy presented in the subjective experience of prospective parents play a significant role. The methods used to study prenatal attachment are described. Based on the review, practical implications for working with people experiencing perinatal loss are formulated.

Keywordsmother-fetus attachment, perinatal period, perinatal loss, antenatal attachment, prenatal attachment
