AbstractArchaeological excavations of the Truvor hillfort in Izborsk studied the entire territory of an old Russian border town. The article presents the methods and results of the historical reconstruction of the town planning grid and buildings in the first half of the XIth century. Unlike many other Russian towns, the cultural layer of Izborsk has not preserved organic remains, so only fragments of carbonized logs and collapses of stoves have survived from the log houses. At the same time, the advantage of this site is a full study of the territory. Based on the plans of the town fortifications with gates and palisade trenches along the streets the system of town quarters has been outlined. Similar materials of better preservation obtained by archaeologists in other towns of Russia help to present the appearance of dwellings.
