Russian and Hispanic Americas in XVIII centuries: a problem of the Pacific frontier

The article examines the influence of the “Pacific Frontier” factor in the foreign policy of Russia and Spain in the second half of the 18th century. A historical, comparative, and retrospective analysis of archival documents has revealed that Spanish diplomacy saw Russian penetration into the Pacific as a threat to its possessions in Spanish America. The government of Catherine the Great, using the fears of the Spanish authorities, put a powerful pressure on the Spanish government to force it to abandon their maneuvers in the Mediterranean, and take an acceptable for Russia stance on signing a peace treaty of 1774 with Turkey, as well as to recognize Russia as a full maritime power. The skillful balanced diplomacy of Catherine the Great contributed to Russia’s territorial advancement in America. Catherine the Great managed to not only ensure the expansion of "Russian America’s” borders, but also to protect the interests of Russia in the Black Sea. The article also discusses the history of the formation of the Russian-Spanish border in America, shows the importance of Russian and Spanish expeditions for the economic and administrative development of the North Pacific. The study was conducted as part of an interdisciplinary approach, includes a wide range of domestic and foreign archival sources.
