Abstract

The article analyzes some features of transformation of the social and political system in Uruguay ― a country that managed to develop itself for decades without any cataclysms (with an exception of the short-term period of dictatorship). Throughout the XIX century of Uruguayan politics, the traditional forces dominated, such as National Party and Colorado Party. Both were pursuing basically similar course succeeding each other on the political Olympus. The bipartisan model lasted over 150 years but had gradually begun to erode. In the 70s of the XX century, a third force emerged in the name of Broad Front coalition. That political force had remained at the top of power for 15 years. In March 2020, as a result of democratic elections, it gave way to the opposition. The author pays attention to Tabare Vazquez’s personality, as well.
