Abstract

The article explains possible causes, real circumstances and a timeline of the emergence of holders of passports of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay among Soviet “illegal” intelligence officers of 1930s and 1940s. The article is based upon the Comintern files of the Russian State Archive of Social-Political History (RGASPI) and the Archival Directorate of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Uruguay. A valuable addition is the official reply by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) to a request from the Russian State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK).
