Abstract

The article gives brief information about the main stages of the life path of the recognized coryphaeus in the field of deciphering the writings of the ancient Maya Yu.V.Knorozov. Since 1953 Yu.V.Knorozov was the member of staff of the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad, in 1955 he defended his thesis and was awarded scientific degrees of Candidate and of Doctor of Historical Sciences at the same sitting of the Academic Council. In 1963 and 1975 Yu.V.Knorozov's fundamental monographs "Writing of the Maya Indians" and "Maya Hieroglyphic Codices" were published and brought him the world fame. Subsequently, these works were republished in Mexico and in the United States.
