Данная статья посвящена особенностям современного изучения леворадикальных вооруженных движений в Латинской Америке. В качестве объекта избраны теоретико-методологические подходы, которые представители западной историографии применяли при объяснении становления, функционирования и развития такого социально-политического явления, как «герилья». Статья построена по принципу выделения основных аспектов, которые освещались в общих работах и тех, что рассматривали партизанские движения в отдельных странах. Значительное внимание уделяется определению исследователями предпосылок для распространения идеи вооруженной борьбы, характера лидерства в герилье и ее вклада в жизнь местных сообществ.
