Abstract

The article examines the economic relations between China and Japan in the context of the COVID-19, analyzes the state of production chains, trade and investment. Economic relations of two countries are considered in space - at the regional and global level, and in time - at different stages of the spread and fight against the COVID-19 in the world.

Despite the existing difficulties in the China-Japanese economic relations, they are still harmonious compared to political relations. In early 2020, the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 had a serious negative impact on the global economy, including damaged China-Japanese economic relations. Faced with hard and unstable economic situation, China and Japan, as the two largest economies in East Asia, the second and third economies in the world, needed to strengthen their interaction in order to turn the crisis into a new opportunity to develop economic relations of two countries and resuscitate the global and regional economic.

Chinese and Japanese scholars have expressed different views on China-Japanese relations in the context of the COVID-19. Chinese scholars are more optimistic, the overwhelming majority of them believe that there is a new opportunity for both countries to develop cooperation and strengthen bilateral economic relations. The views of Japanese scholars are more realistic; most of them believe that some adjustments should be made in order  to  develop the economic relations between the two countries.

The author sets the task of identifying changes in economic relations between China and Japan in the context of the COVID-19 and assessing the prospects for future cooperation. The article also analyzes China-Japanese economic relations before and after the appearance of the COVID-19, traces the impact of the Sino-American trade war on China-Japanese economic relations.
