Unusual colonies: English Expansion in Canada in the 16th — 18th Centuries

The article deals with the English/British expansion in the northern part of the North America (in present-day Canada) since the early 16th century till the American Revolution. Special attention is given to the three “unusual colonies”: Newfoundland, Hudson Bay (Rupert’s Land), and Nova Scotia. It reveals the peculiarities of their economy, geostrategic position, settlement, and interaction with the metropolis. It is noted that their main difference from the thirteen continental colonies (the future U.S.A.) consisted in their physical isolation from them and from each other, their ultimate dependence on the metropolis and alienated (literally or figuratively) position, which eventually determined their further historical fate.
